Are Bengal Cats Hypoallergenic? A Guide for Allergy Sufferers
Can you own a Bengal cat with allergies? Learn why Bengals are often easier for allergy sufferers, what causes cat allergies and how to prepare your home.
The short answer
No cat is completely hypoallergenic. Allergies are caused mainly by a protein called Fel d 1, found in saliva and skin, not by fur itself.
However, many allergy sufferers report milder symptoms around Bengals than around other breeds.
Why Bengals may be easier for allergy sufferers
Bengals have a short, fine, pelt-like coat that sheds less than most breeds and needs little grooming. Less shedding means less saliva-coated hair spread around the home.
Bengals also groom themselves for shorter periods than many cats, which can reduce the allergen left on their coat.
How to reduce allergens at home
Use a HEPA air purifier, wash bedding weekly, keep the cat out of the bedroom and brush your Bengal gently once a week.
Spend time with a Bengal before you buy. We are happy to arrange a visit so you can see how you react.
